Disk Defragmenter (August 1998).iso/full/W98Comp/Access/Defrag.gif) You
can use the Disk Defragmenter to re-arrange files and
unused space on your hard drive, so that programs run
faster. There has been one addition to this accessory
since Windows 95. This is the inclusion of a Settings
button. You can decide whether to rearrange program files
so that programs start faster and/or to check the drive
for errors. You can also set these options to apply just
for this session, or to be used every time you defragment
a drive. That small insignificant tick box for
de-fragmenting program files in order to load programs
faster is actually one of the most significant
enhancements made to Windows. Disk Defragmenter takes a
log file from a program called Taskmon.exe which tells it
which files are needed by which programs so they can be
placed sequentially on the hard drive. Then, when the
program is loaded, the system does not have to waste time
seeking files from different places on the disk, but can
load them in one long straight read, hence accelerating
the load. See also Accelerated
